Waiting for Christmas

Waiting for Christmas, while important things are happening around the world and there is fibrillation everywhere, in the Magone/Margarita street children Shelter life goes on "peacefully".

In this house, fall like a piece of Lego from the hands of a giant child in the middle of a shantytown, the rest of the world seems an abstract painting, a foggy rumor, a kind of mirage trembled by the heat.

So far I figured the most important think for someone like me, a journalist, was to be in the right place at the right time, exactly where the "History" take place.

Once again I was wrong! At these latitudes the world won't be moved by wars, economic crises, even tornadoes or earthquakes, which here looks like a butterfly beat.

From a place like this it early turns out that the stories to tell are straight into the eyes of those children while they are looking at you with a kind of surprise, because after months you are not yet gone, you haven't left them as their own moms did once, being despair, tired or hungry.

These guys believe they do not deserve anything, because from the contempt of a mother, the refusal of a father, the beatings and the tortures from those who would have loved them, certainly doesn't come the self-esteem rather fear, self pity, self-injury, disillusionment.

Who are they to expect that someone will consider them as real children, who are if not "bad luck", "feiticos" rejected by their own families?

Here then is where the amazement born, when they realize that someone considers them. That wonder is the sap of life. That wonder is the valuable thing to be preserved, is the seed of the future, is my personal, sensational, breaking news!

Praise of their truth...

My friends from Magone/Margarida street children shelter, let me tell you, even if it's already clear, have more life inside than a bottle of Champagne. I wouldn't live another minute without their truth.

They are so real when they are sick, so sick they look dead, because here, when malaria joins them, the fever rises so much that if you touch them you burn.

They are so real when they feel embarassed. Heaven! I had forgotten what it means to prove that healthy, genuine embarrassment in showing themselves, in public speaking, in greeting people. Where is such spontaneity in the world we know?

They are so real,  when they slowly come along, after having been told what to do and then start asking you questions on everything, because they only know the piece of world in between the garbage bin and the street.

They are so real when they laugh and it's not like when our kids laugh and their eyes laugh as well, here when they laugh their eyes stay sad. That's the real thing, which can not be erased.

They are so real when they cry and so real when they play and so real when they look at the floor because you're going to leave them, but they don't know how to tell you they are sorry.

They are so real in their old t-shirts, in their torn pants, that every time you try to patch up and it is more to sit on the ground and get together to talk, that make them dress as you would expect.

They are as real as anything from the day when my daughters were born, and now their truth makes me weigh more this vain, useless lie in which I wallow believing I'm the one who knows everything.
